About

Hello, I'm Paul

Welcome to Tech Ramblings of a 50 Something! I'm Paul, and I enjoy exploring technology, trying things out and sharing what I learn along the way.

Over the years I've helped plenty of people get to grips with computers, phones and the internet. This blog is my way of doing the same thing for anyone who could use a friendly helping hand.

Why this blog exists

Technology moves quickly, and it's easy to feel left behind. New apps, new settings, new passwords, and it often seems everyone else already knows what they're doing. They usually don't!

I created this blog to help people feel more comfortable with everyday technology. My aim is simple:

  • Plain English, no jargon. If a technical word can't be avoided, I'll explain it.
  • Nobody should feel daft for asking. We all start somewhere, and sometimes the smallest explanation makes the biggest difference.
  • Go at your own pace. Think of this blog as a collection of useful notes you can bookmark and come back to whenever you need them.

What you'll find here

I particularly enjoy using Google services, so there's plenty about those, but I cover other everyday tech too:

  • Google: Gmail, Google Drive, Google Photos, Chrome, Docs and more.
  • Staying safe online: passwords, 2-Step Verification, spotting scams and keeping your accounts secure.
  • AI: what AI tools are, what they're good (and not so good) at, and how to use them sensibly.
  • Windows and Office: getting comfortable with your PC and everyday programs.
  • Everyday tech: troubleshooting tips, handy settings and the occasional ramble about my own technology projects.

How the guides work

Step by step

Each guide takes you through things one step at a time, in the order you'll actually do them, so you can follow along with your own computer or phone.

"Last checked" dates

Menus and buttons change from time to time. Newer guides show a "Last checked" date so you know how recently the steps were confirmed. If something looks different on your screen, please leave a comment and I'll take another look.

Fact-checked

I check the steps against the official help pages from companies like Google and Microsoft, to make sure the advice is as accurate and up to date as I can make it.

A quick, honest note about AI

I use AI tools to help me research and write some of the content on this blog. Every guide is then checked against official sources before it's published, and the views and experiences shared here are my own.

I also have a YouTube channel. Just search for Tech Ramblings on YouTube to find it.

This is an independent personal blog. It is not affiliated with, or endorsed by, Google, Microsoft or xAI. Product names are used only to describe what each guide covers.
