Grok Bot on the iPhone Action Button: A Simple Guide

Illustration of a cartoon smartphone with a friendly robot face on screen and a glowing side button, beside the title Grok Bot on the iPhone Action Button, with labels for iPhone 15 Pro or later, App 1.16+ and Easy setup.

A short AI news post, written 20 October 2026. Everything below comes from Grok Bot's official announcement, its help pages and Apple's own iPhone guide on that date. Details can change, so check the sources at the bottom before relying on anything.

On the evening of 19 October 2026 (UK time), the official Grok Bot account on X announced a small but handy new trick: you can now set your iPhone's Action Button to start a voice chat with Grok Bot. One press, and you're talking to it.

Grok Bot is the AI helper from SpaceXAI (the company behind Grok, formerly known as xAI) that works on its own computer and carries out tasks for you, asking for your approval before anything important. Here's what this new shortcut does, who can use it and how to set it up, in plain English.

What is the Action Button?

The Action Button is the small button on the left-hand side of newer iPhones, above the volume buttons. It replaced the old Ring/Silent switch. Apple's guide explains that you can choose what it does, such as switching Silent mode on and off, opening the camera or turning on the torch. To use it, you press and hold it.

What's new?

You can now point the Action Button at Grok Bot. According to the official announcement and its follow-up post, pressing it starts a voice chat with your Bot, so you can talk to it straight away instead of finding the app and tapping through to the voice chat button.

Voice chat itself isn't new. The Grok Bot app already let you talk to your Bot live. What's new is the one-press shortcut. If you're curious about the voice technology behind it, I covered that in Grok Voice 3.0 Explained.

Why would you use it?

  • Speed. If you often think of a job while you're busy, such as "remind me to renew the car insurance" or "find me a plumber's number", one press is quicker than opening the app.
  • Hands and eyes free(ish). Talking is easier than typing on a small screen, especially if your eyesight or fingers aren't what they were.
  • Away from the computer. Your Bot works on its own cloud computer, so you can hand it a task while you're out and check the result later.

Who can use it?

  • An iPhone 15 Pro or later. That's what the official post says. Older iPhones, such as the iPhone 14, don't have an Action Button.
  • The Grok Bot app, version 1.16 or newer. Grok Bot is its own app in the App Store, separate from the main Grok app.
  • A Grok Bot account on an eligible paid plan (more on cost below).

How to set it up

These are the steps from the official Grok Bot post, with a little extra detail from Apple's iPhone guide.

Step 1: Update the Grok Bot app

Open the App Store, search for Grok Bot and tap Update if it's offered. You need version 1.16 or newer.

Step 2: Open the Action Button settings

Open the Settings app on your iPhone and tap Action Button. You'll see a picture of the side of your phone.

Step 3: Choose Shortcut

Swipe sideways through the options until the name below the picture says Shortcut.

Step 4: Pick Grok Bot and Start Voice Chat

Tap the button below Shortcut, choose Grok Bot, then choose Start Voice Chat. Apple's guide points out that with Shortcut, the Action Button does nothing until you pick a specific option, so don't skip this bit.

Step 5: Try it

Press and hold the Action Button. A voice chat with your Bot should start. Say what you'd like help with, just as you would on a phone call.

Changed your mind? Go back to Settings, then Action Button, and swipe to a different option, such as Silent Mode. It's easy to switch back.

What does it cost?

The announcement doesn't mention any extra charge for the Action Button shortcut. Grok Bot itself is a paid product. The official help pages say it's included with paid individual Cursor plans and the Cursor Teams plan, or with an individual SuperGrok, SuperGrok Plus or SuperGrok Heavy subscription linked to your account, and that usage resets weekly. SpaceXAI also includes Grok Bot in the Premium plan and above of The X Subscription, which I explained in The X Subscription Explained. Check your own plan before you rely on it.

Limits worth knowing

  • iPhone only, and only newer models. The announcement is about the iPhone Action Button on the iPhone 15 Pro or later. It doesn't mention Android or older iPhones.
  • It replaces what your button did before. The Action Button does one job at a time, so if you used it for Silent mode or the torch, that job moves aside.
  • You need an internet connection. Grok Bot's help page lists this as a requirement for the mobile app.
  • It's a shortcut, not a new brain. Your Bot is just as clever (and just as fallible) as it was before. Only the way in has changed.

Privacy and safety notes

  • Mind who's listening. A voice chat is spoken out loud, so avoid saying passwords, bank details or anything private where other people can hear.
  • Never say a password or code to an AI. Grok Bot's help pages say that when a website needs a password, two-factor code or similar, you take over that step yourself.
  • Check before you approve. Grok Bot is designed to check it has your go-ahead before actions it can't undo, such as sending, posting, buying or deleting. Read each request properly, especially if you set the job up quickly by voice.
  • Keep your phone locked down. A shortcut to your AI helper is another reason to use a passcode or Face ID on your iPhone.
  • AI can get things wrong. Check anything important before you act on it.

Frequently asked questions

I can't see Grok Bot in the Shortcut list. What now?

Make sure the Grok Bot app is installed, signed in and updated to version 1.16 or newer, then try again. Also check you've got an iPhone 15 Pro or later, as earlier models don't have the button.

Does this work on Android?

The announcement only mentions the iPhone Action Button. Android users can still start a voice chat from inside the Grok Bot app.

Is this the same as Siri?

No. Siri is Apple's own assistant. This shortcut simply opens a voice chat with your Grok Bot.

Do I have to use the Action Button?

Not at all. You can still open the Grok Bot app and choose Start voice chat in a conversation, or just type.

Is Paul affiliated with xAI or SpaceXAI?

No. I'm not affiliated with xAI or SpaceXAI in any way, and nobody's paying me to write this.
